This mother from Mumbai raised important questions about breastfeeding and breast milk

Should not hospitals obtain the consent of mothers or parents before feeding an infant with formula, at least when the baby is a few days old? Do our hospitals try to promote formula milk on breast milk or do they care about the newborn's well-being? Is not it pure negligence?

All these questions are raised recently. A movement was waved by a 31-year-old Mumbai resident through a petition on Change.org, Jincy Varghese whose infant was formula-fed when he was at the NICU. "When my baby was born, he was kept at the NICU to watch his sugar levels. During the time that he spent at the NICU, he was fed formula. I have not been informed of this and my consent has not been taken by the hospital, "she wrote in her petition.

It has become a problem in many countries. Many hospitals. "Later, I realized that what happened to me is a widespread practice across the country. Especially when a mother recovers after a cesarean section, or when a baby is at the NICU, many hospitals just go ahead and feed the formula, without informing the mother, "adds an angry Varghese.

"I want the government asked all hospitals to obtain the prior consent of the mother before giving her a newborn formula," said Varghese in his petition.

Interestingly, this debate has surfaced many times. the world's lowest breastfeeding rates and how different parts of the world have not yet fully understood its importance. Recently, a Malayalam magazine was slammed for featuring a woman breastfeeding her child on the front cover. All this seems to indicate one thing: our lack of understanding of the importance of breast milk.

The WHO and UNICEF recommend that breastfeeding be started within one hour of the birth of the child. be administered during the first six months of the child 's life and ideally should continue until the age of two years to ensure the healthy growth and development of the child in addition to reduce the infant mortality rate. This is because there is no alternative to breast milk or colostrum, the yellow pre-milk that promotes your child's health.
