Zion has the bruised knee, no more championship of summer

Zion Williamson, the No. 1 pick of the New Orleans pelicans in this year's NBA draft, will not compete in the rest of the Las Vegas Summer League after suffering a knee injury left in his debut, announced Saturday the team.

Williamson did not play in the second half of Friday's game against the New York Knicks because of a touchdown from one knee to the other, and the Executive Vice President Pelicans, David Griffin, announced Saturday that it would be closed.

"Zion will leave this incident without a problem," Griffin said in a statement. "However, out of caution, we decided that he would not be in the games for the rest of the NBA summer league, and will continue to participate in training and fitness with our performance team."

The pelican coach, Alvin Gentry, told ESPN's Malika Andrews that the team was extremely careful with Williamson while he was working on getting in shape.

Williamson spoke as a professional for the first time on Friday night, scoring 11 points in nine minutes in the first half, including some thunderous dunks against the Knicks and his other Duke star, RJ Barrett.

The match was suspended in the fourth quarter after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake near Ridgecrest, California, about 200km from Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Summer League games resumed Saturday after the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion were deemed "safe to open" by structural engineers, the NBA said Saturday.
