Cubs veteran Ben Zobrist remains on staff leave, and court papers in Chicago indicate he is being divorced.
According to the documents, his wife, Julianna, is quoted as the plaintiff. Julianna Zobrist is a professional singer who has performed the national anthem of the teams for which her husband played. She also sang "God Bless America" before the fourth game of the 2016 World Series between Cubs and Indians at Wrigley Field.
Zobrist, 37, is in the final season of a four-year contract that he signed with the Cubs after starting his career in Tampa Bay in 2006. He helped the Kansas City Royals to win the title in 2015 and did the same the next season with the Cubs.
The team did not give any reason for its absence or potential date of return.
"No indication," said Joe Maddon. "I sent a text message to him the other day and reminded him how much I care about him, how much we miss him."
Zobrist hit .241 with 10 RBIs in 26 games before taking his absence from the team.
