Zoom decreases, bringing much of the remote workplace and classroom to a standstill

Zoom, the videoconferencing service that has become ubiquitous in the pandemic life of remote working, suffered a massive outage on Monday morning, the company recognized.

“If you’re having trouble signing in to Zoom, we’ve identified the issue and are working on a fix,” San Jose-based Zoom said in a 10:23 a.m. EDT statement. “We are very sorry for the inconvenience.”

The blackout could have affected millions of employees, with meetings that went online during the pandemic, and students, possibly on their first day of the new fall semester remotely.

Law professor at the American University Robert Tsai retweeted an announcement on Zoom failure and added, “Prepare to teach on the first day of class and receive this email.”

But Penn State student Conor Camazine tweeted the “It’s good” gif, adding the hashtag #zoomdown and observing, this “is certainly a way of getting back to taking a full class load.”

At 12:14 p.m. EDT, Zoom announced that “Meeting and webinar service has been restored for the majority of users,” then at 12:44 p.m. EDT, the company said “everything should be working fine.”

“We are continuing to monitor the situation”, Zoom said. “Thank you all for your patience and our sincere apologies for disrupting your day.”
