Today we take a closer look at a somewhat peculiar device, the new ZTE Axon 30 Ultra. In terms of specs, the Axon 30 Ultra features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, which places the phone in the flagship category of the top performers, and we expect the device to perform in much the same way as the Most other alternatives on the market. It comes with 8 or 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage options – there is no expandable storage available.
The screen of the Axon 30 Ultra is both powerful, but not quite high-end as we have seen from other suppliers. ZTE opted to stick with a lower resolution of 2400 x 1080 with the 6.67-inch screen, which is a step below that of other 1440p alternatives such as Samsung, Xiaomi, or OnePlus / OPPO. ZTE does include a high refresh rate, however, and manages to push things up to 144Hz, as well as a touch sample rate of 300Hz. It’s a bit of a similar approach to what ASUS is taking for ROG Phones. , and the lower resolution will be more efficient since it does not have newer advanced display technologies.
At 6.67 “and a body footprint of 161.5 x 72.96mm, the Axon 30 Ultra is considerably smaller than other” Ultra “phones on the market, and actually fits in with what I think. considers a happy medium between big screen and still good-handling of the device by hand.

The phone has both a curved front display glass and a curved rear glass which offers very good ergonomics and the phone feels smaller than it is because of it. It’s still a very “edgy” phone in that the metal frame protrudes a bit from the sides of the phone and the top and bottom faces are flat – this is a design aspect that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, but in some cases. this case i think it has been implemented well and gives the phone a better solid grip.

The camera setup on the Axon 30 Ultra is quite interesting, with a single camera setup: the S21 type ultra-wide, main (wide) and secondary wide-angle sub unit with all 64MP sensors, as well as a small periscope telephoto module.
The ultra-wide and secondary wide-angle feature 64.2-megapixel quad-Bayer sensors that can reach up to 16 megapixels during normal shooting. These are 0.7 µm pixels and so the sensors aren’t that big in terms of 1 / 1.98 “formats, and we would generally like to keep them in their bined mode most of the time. The ultra-wide has 13.85mm optical eq. With f / 2.2, while the wide secondary has 31.45mm optical eq. F / 1.9.The latter is quite unusual – it is similar to the secondary of the S21, but due to the quad configuration -Bayer and the lack of OIS it is not as useful. ZTE calls this a portrait lens, although it is a much shorter focal length than what we are used to for portrait photography.
The main camera is also 64.2 MP, although it is a larger sensor with 0.8 µm pixels and a 1 / 1.73 “aspect ratio. It is still limited to 16. MP for regular shots and has an OIS with an eq of 26.11 mm. Optics with f / 1.6 aperture.
Finally, the telephoto module is a tiny 8 MP sensor with 1.0 µm pixels. As a 1 / 3.92 “format with an area of only 7.99mm², it is quite small, but the optics have a long focal length of 123.1mm, although the aperture is also dark at f / 4.9.
Usually we see vendors using “dummy” sensors in order to increase the number of camera modules, but here ZTE is using four functional modules, and this second wide-angle module is certainly interesting in what it is trying to achieve.
Generally, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra comes with an excellent build quality that is exceptionally strong and a premium feel, as well as a design that, without going out of the ordinary, is very ergonomic and works well for the phone. In general, it’s also the “smaller” form factor that makes the device stand out, with a 73mm width more reasonable and lighter than the competition.
