ZZ Top gave their first gig since bassist Dusty Hill died on Friday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
While guitarist Billy Gibbons didn’t speak at length about his late bandmate, he did acknowledge the bassist a few times during the show, as well as Hill’s desire for the band to continue without him.
“We’re going to have a great time here tonight,” Gibbons told the audience after the opening of “Got Me Under Pressure”. “I have a new guy here, as you know. Dusty gave me the directive. My friend, your mate, Elwood Francis is going to hold him behind me.
Later on the show, Gibbons noted (via UCR), “How about that Elwood, ripping that background out there for Dusty.” Gibbons also joked that Francis was in the process of growing a beard to suit his new role.
Francis had been Hill’s replacement for the past few weeks after Hill left ZZ Top in order to deal with a hip problem. On July 28, the group announced that Hill had died in his sleep at his home in Houston, Texas, aged 72. No cause of death has been revealed.
ZZ Top was scheduled to perform on July 28, but chose to postpone this concert “to bring our minds together,” Gibbons said. Variety in an interview after Hill’s death.
“I think everyone was relieved that we had some time to regroup and think. But at the same time, everyone was ready, on their feet. And they said, ‘Come on. You heard Dusty’s directive as he bowed to leave the bridge. He turned and pointed and said, ‘Come on. The show must continue.'”
Gibbons continued, “So here we are. [Friday] night we’re going to sort of pick up sticks and move on. I can take his stage hat and throw it on his mic, and I’ll sing one for the Dust.
