Americans are certainly not united on this question.

Just one in five Americans have “great confidence” in President Biden’s ability to achieve his goal of unifying the country, according to a new poll released Sunday.

While 22% said Biden would unify the country, 24% remained very skeptical, saying they “had no faith at all” in his ability to do so, the ABC News / Ipsos poll found.

Thirty-five percent said they had “a fair amount” of confidence that Biden could unite the country and 19 percent said they had “not so much” confidence.

Survey respondents were asked their opinion after viewing a video of Biden’s inaugural address urging Americans to see themselves “not as adversaries, but as neighbors.”

“We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the screaming and lower the temperature. For without unity there is no peace – only bitterness and fury. No progress – just an exhausting scandal. No nation – only a state of chaos, ”Biden said.

At the same time, 71% of those who watched all or parts of Biden’s inaugural address said his post was “very” or “somewhat” compelling.

29% of people who watched it found it “not very convincing” or “not at all convincing”.

The poll looked at a random sample of 504 adults across the country between January 22 and 23.

It has a margin of error of plus / minus 5.0 percentage points.
