PLACER COUNTY (CBS13) – Several agencies are investigating the cause of death of an individual who died Thursday, hours after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine – the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said on Saturday.
The sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post that the individual tested positive for the virus in late December.
“The individual received a COVID-19 vaccine several hours before his death on January 21, 2021,” the agency wrote. “The vaccine was not administered by Placer County Public Health.”
The news of a death hours after the vaccine sparked questions and concerns from some Californians like Britni Tucker.
“I am really counting on the vaccine to cure this pandemic. Because I have a 9 month old daughter that I’m trying to protect, ”Tucker said. “Now, I think that’s something I should definitely do more research on.”
Others, like Auburn’s Eric Parra, say they never planned on getting it in the first place.
“It was rushed so quickly,” Parra said. “I don’t just get it myself until I can see it works after a while.”
CBS13 spoke with infectious disease expert Dr Dean Blumberg of UC Davis to ask general questions about vaccine safety measures as he is not familiar with this particular case.
“All healthcare professionals make sure to report any adverse event of concern after vaccination, even if it is unrelated – just to pick up any kind of signal,” said Dr Blumberg.
He says the COVID-19 vaccine is not a shot in the dark. He said there had been no increase in vaccine deaths and that thousands of study subjects had been screened before each vaccine was approved. He also says that after a vaccine anything can happen. The cause of death is still too early to be known.
“They might have other things that are basically random,” he said.
CBS13 also asked Dr Blumberg – if a person wants to get vaccinated after testing positive for COVID-19, how long should they wait? He said that as long as the individual is no longer contagious and is feeling well, there is no time limit.
Further details regarding the person’s death were not disclosed, but the sheriff’s office said local, state and federal agencies were on the investigation.
Earlier in the week, a batch of Moderna vaccine was withdrawn from use in the state, after some people felt sick after receiving the vaccine. This lot has since been cleared for approval and reused. It is not known which vaccine was used in this particular Placer County case.
According to the sheriff’s office, the Placer County coroner’s office will perform an autopsy by Monday.
CBS13 contacted the California Department of Public Health, but only received a statement that said:
“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased. We take these examples seriously, which is why we are working with our government partners to investigate the cause. We are working together and will continue to use data and science to determine how to do it. “
