The long-term consequences of the coronavirus infection continue to emerge as the virus continues to rage around the world, now for almost a year.
A new study in the UK has found that nearly a third of patients who recovered from COVID-19 were hospitalized again within five months and one in eight patients died of complications from the virus within a few month.
The results of the study were originally published in The telegraph, a newspaper from Great Britain. He found that out of 47,780 people who were released from the hospital, 29.4% of them were readmitted within 140 days. Of these, 12.3% died later.
COVID-19 has devastating and lasting effects on many organs of the body. Heart problems, chronic liver problems and kidney failure are the most common. Unfortunately, according to a report by The Guardian, these complications disproportionately affect “persons belonging to ethnic minorities” and those under 70 years of age.

“The idea that we have this increased level of risk in people – especially young people – means that we have a lot of work to do,” Dr. Charlotte summers, a professor of intensive care medicine not involved in the study, said The Guardian.
Long-term respiratory illness has been found in almost a third of all patients with COVID-19, most of whom had no history of illness.
An earlier study in China found that nearly three-quarters of patients who recover from the virus still had symptoms up to six months later. The study also warned that during this time, antibody levels drop dramatically, leaving a patient prone to re-infection.

The persistent conditions present in this study were largely fatigue and muscle weakness, while some participants also expressed that they had difficulty sleeping, as well as depression and anxiety.
In November, here in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they were “actively working to learn more about the full range of short and long term health effects associated with COVID-19.” The CDC noted that several multi-year studies are underway to determine the frequency of symptoms, who is most likely to get them, and whether those symptoms eventually go away.
