Coast Guard and Navy search for survivors by sea and air.
A US Navy helicopter crashed Tuesday afternoon off San Diego.
“An MH-60S helicopter aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) crashed into the sea while performing routine flight operations approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of San Diego at 4:30 PM PST , Aug. 31, “the 3rd Navy Fleet said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the US Coast Guard said preliminary information indicates that one person has been rescued and five people are missing. The Navy also confirmed that a crew member was rescued and search efforts are continuing for the remaining crew members.
The Coast Guard and Navy conducted search and rescue operations by sea and air.
The accident comes just 12 days after Captain Amy Bauernschmidt took command from Abraham Lincoln.
The Abraham Lincoln is domiciled in San Diego, the Navy said in a statement Tuesday night.
