Ten people were injured in an explosion at a factory in Dippin ‘Dots in Kentucky as a truck unloaded liquid nitrogen, police and company officials said.
The explosion at the Paducah factory late Wednesday afternoon occurred in a building owned by Dippin ‘Dots used to make ingredients for a third-party company, police said.
A truck was unloading liquid nitrogen used to freeze popular ice cream into a storage tank when the explosion rocked the facility, injuring 10 of the 11 people inside, the police spokeswoman said. Paducah, Robin Newberry.
Nine of the 10 injured workers were treated and released from hospitals on Wednesday evening, Dippin ‘Dots spokeswoman Billie Stuber told The Post.
“This is a terrible accident, which happened at our contract manufacturing facility and did not involve our head office and our ice cream production plant,” company officials said in a statement. “Right now we are focused on the well-being of our colleagues who have been injured. “
Dippin ‘Dots CEO Scott Fischer called on the public to pray for the affected workers.
“My heart is with our employees, especially those who were injured in the terrible incident this afternoon,” Fischer said in a statement to the Post. “I care deeply about our employees – they are part of my family. “
The explosion occurred at a different factory than where an explosion in 2019 injured four people at a Dippin ‘Dots manufacturing plant on nearby Charter Oak Drive, the Paducah Sun reported.
A city official said at the time that the plant appeared to have a nitrogen leak.
The cause of Wednesday’s explosion was not immediately clear. A road to the facility remained closed until Thursday morning, WPSD reported.
