DHEC reports nearly 800 new cases of COVID-19 in HC; most cases in Horry County

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) – The South Carolina health agency has reported a huge increase in COVID-19 cases and most are in Horry County.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 798 new confirmed cases on Friday. Data shows 110 of those cases were in Horry County. Lexington County had the second highest number of confirmed cases with 82.

The health agency also reported three new confirmed deaths from the coronavirus.

DHEC also revealed on Friday that more than 90% of COVID-19 cases and deaths were in unvaccinated South Carolinians.

“We cannot stress this enough: Eligible residents must protect themselves and their loved ones by being fully immunized. The full vaccination is done two weeks after a person has received their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or Janssen’s single vaccine, ”DHEC Director of Public Health Dr Brannon Traxler said. “This two week period is important because it allows the vaccine to reach its full effectiveness, giving an individual the best chance to ward off the virus and its impacts if a breakthrough case occurs.”

DHEC strongly encourages everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible, including people who have had COVID-19 in the past.
