10 rabid bats found in Santa Clarita this year, one left in front of the Newhall vet's office

Since the beginning of the year, ten rabid bats have been found in Santa Clarita, including only three in September, prompting public health authorities to warn themselves.

Public health officials are asking the community for help in locating anyone who may have touched or touched a rabid bat found in front of the All Creatures Veterinary Center at 22722 Lyons Avenue in Newhall on Tuesday, September 10th.

"The bat was left on a towel at the entrance of the All Creatures Veterinary Center and tested positive for rabies," said public health officials.

Any contact with a rabid bat is a very serious health problem, according to health officials.

Rabies is a life-threatening disease that requires timely preventative medical treatment. People who have touched or have been in contact with this bat should immediately see a doctor for medical treatment, health officials said.

If a resident sees a bat dead or dying on the ground, the authorities advise him not to handle it and contact their local animal control agency to collect it for rabies screening. Any potential bite of bats caused by people or pets can be reported to Veterinary Public Health at 213-288-7060.

Although the vast majority of bats in the wild are not rabid, an average of 35 bats (15 to 20% of the bats tested) are detected each year in Los Angeles County, according to health authorities.

As rabies is a deadly disease and it is often impossible to visually determine if an animal is rabid, any contact with bats and other wildlife should be avoided. A scratch on a tooth or bite of a rabid animal could cause rabies infection in humans or other animals, according to officials.
