Ten residents of a nursing home in Brenham tested positive for COVID-19 after taking one or both doses of a vaccine, the facility confirmed on Wednesday.
Six residents of the Focused Care nursing home had received their first dose, while four had received their second dose of the vaccine, facility officials said. They were among 17 residents who recently tested positive.
Five residents who tested positive refused to be vaccinated. While, two of the positive residents were admitted to the nursing home after vaccines were offered, according to the facility.
Six nursing home staff also tested positive. Three of those who tested positive had not yet been vaccinated.
Fourteen of the infected residents have been transferred to targeted care in Baytown. Two residents currently reside in the village of Kruse in the COVID-19 unit, while another has been admitted to a local hospital in Brenham, the statement said.
The Brenham Nursing Home was performing routine testing but began testing for the outbreak after a staff member tested positive on February 22, according to a statement from the facility.
“Outbreak screening takes place every 3 to 4 days and is required by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC),” the statement said. “Frequent testing will continue until no positive test is returned within 14 days.”
After frequent testing is completed, residents will continue to be tested twice a week for Covid-19.
Nanette Riedell-Mendez told KPRC her mother tested positive for COVID-19 after taking her last dose of the Pfizer vaccine in January.
On March 1, nursing home officials told Riedell-Mendez that her mother, Francine Riedell, had tested positive.
The 95-year-old collapsed and was hospitalized, but now “seems to be doing well,” Riedell-Mendez told KPRC.
In total, 21 of the 35 residents of the retirement home have been vaccinated. Six residents refused to receive the vaccine, according to the facility.
The six staff members who tested positive went into quarantine off-site. One of the staff members completed his quarantine and returned to work on March 8.
There are no positive staff or residents on site at the Brenham Nursing Home.
Focused Care will continue to operate with the same safeguards in place before Governor Abbott’s announcement until new guidelines are issued by the Centers for Disease and Prevention Control (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS ) “, said the establishment.
In the statement, the facility notes that the Centers for Disease Control say it takes two weeks after a person is vaccinated “for the body to build protection (immunity) against the virus that causes COVID-19.”
“This means that it is possible that a person could still contract COVID-19 before or right after the vaccination, and then get sick because the vaccine did not have enough time to provide protection,” according to the CDC .
