At least 100 cases of the coronavirus have been linked to a day care center in Omaha, Nebraska, including some of the British variant, health officials said.
Rosewood Academy child care and kindergarten were closed last week after the first cases were confirmed, according to the Douglas County Department of Health.
As of Sunday, more than 100 cases of COVID-19 were linked to the initial outbreak, and tests have shown some to be caused by the UK variant, a spokesperson for the health department told ABC News.
“This underscores the need to be vigilant about non-pharmaceutical interventions and to have educators vaccinated,” the spokesperson said in a statement to ABC News.
The spokesperson could not give an exact figure on cases of variants in the UK because Nebraska does not do genomic sequencing on every sample.
In a statement to ABC affiliate KETV, a spokesperson for Kelli Hansen, the owner of the daycare, said staff and children were among those infected.
Mandy Evert, a mother whose 4-year-old daughter dated Rosewood, told KETV the child tested positive for COVID-19 in early March.
Evert said her daughter had symptoms similar to a sinus infection and had a mild fever.
“We don’t know what the effects will be on my child in the years to come and that’s really where I’m concerned,” Evert said.
The school is cooperating with health officials, the health department spokesperson said.
The school spokesperson told KETV that the school has taken strict security measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and is asking all infected staff and students to self-quarantine.
“Rosewood Academy Childcare and Preschool will continue to work closely and cooperate with the Douglas County Department of Health to monitor this situation and encourage families and staff to get vaccinated as soon as possible,” the door said. -speak in a press release.
The seven-day average of new daily coronavirus cases in Nebraska peaked at around 270 in March, according to the state’s health department.
As of Sunday, about 20.8% of the state’s total population, or 1.48 million, had been fully immunized, state data showed.
