MILWAUKEE (WDJT) – The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) is investigating a double shootout on Saturday night, October 2, which injured a 5-year-old and killed an 11-year-old near Sherman and Burleigh.
The medical examiner named the 11-year-old victim as Taniyla Parker of Milwaukee.
Police said the shooting happened at around 8:57 p.m. on Saturday.
Authorities report that a vehicle approached the car in which the two victims were sitting and opened fire, hitting the victims.
Milwaukee Police said the family immediately attended the Milwaukee District 7 Police Station at 3626 W Fond Du Lac Ave with the injured children.
Police then said station officers provided first aid to the victims until Milwaukee firefighters arrived at the scene and took the two victims to an area hospital.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office said the 11-year-old girl, who was in critical condition, later died of her injuries at the children’s hospital.
The 5-year-old girl remains in stable condition.
A statement regarding the shooting was sent to CBS 58 from the office of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Sunday, stating the following:
“The mayor is extremely disturbed by the violence which killed an eleven-year-old child and injured a five-year-old. He offers his condolences to the family.
He expects to have more to say about the incident tomorrow.
On Sunday October 3, horns sounded in support of Sherman and Burleigh activists holding signs with a simple message: stop killing our children.
Community activists said they were working on patrols in areas where violence is widespread, but admit they are still in shock over what happened.
“I started crying right away, because I’m a mother,” said Shawana Hughes-Houston, original member of the Milwaukee Black Panther Party, “And they’re innocent little kids barely out of school. primary, entering the police station with a gunshot wounds, because they had been hit by a bullet not intended for them.
Hughes-Houston, community activist Felcia Moora and Walter Garron, a state commander with the Brown Berets, were all in Sherman and Burleigh on Sunday to speak out about what happened.
“When I saw my window lights shine on my bedroom wall last night, I knew something tragic had happened again in my community,” said Moore.
Moora said this type of tragedy should be dealt with by parents at home and by the police, who she said should increase the patrol presence without harassing the community.
“I’m sick of watching violent scenes where children or adults have lost their lives in our community,” Moore said.
Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention director Arnitta Holliman said they are working to provide support to victims.
“We care about family members, we want to make sure people have the support they need,” Holliman said.
Garron said they were working together to try to resolve the issue.
“We jointly decided with the two of us, the Brown Berets and the Original Black Panthers of Milwaukee, to start patrolling around the North Side and Burleigh as well to try to raise more awareness in our community,” Garron said.
MPD continues to search for unknown suspects in this case.
