Members of a Texan family say they are “guilty” after a birthday party that left more than a dozen infected with the coronavirus.
Alexa Aregonez, 26, from Arlington, said she dropped off her 57-year-old mother, Enriqueta Aragonez, at the indoor celebration on November 1 and within days all the parents who were in attendance fell ill with the virus.
“My family always said it wouldn’t be us – we’re protecting ourselves. All we do is go to work and come home. We wear a mask, we wash our hands, so it’s normal for us to come together, ”Alexa said, KHOU news station reported.
But when a few loved ones started to feel sick, they all decided to get tested for COVID-19.
A total of 15 family members tested positive – including three who were not at the celebration.
The only one hospitalized was Enriqueta, who was admitted for a day with pneumonia and then again a week later with respiratory problems, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
But Alexa, who has tested negative, said she was aware that “not everyone is as lucky as my family.”
“It’s scary to think that if my whole family had the serious case and each of those 15 people had to go to the hospital,” she told the newspaper.
“First, I would feel guilty for taking resources from people who really need them, and second, I would risk losing my whole family.”
In a video for a local campaign, the family spoke of their terrible ordeal – and urged others not to congregate inside.
“We feel guilty for coming together,” Alexa’s sister said in the video.
