A 15-year-old girl who tested positive for Covid died on the day she was due to be vaccinated, her family said.

Jorja Halliday, of Portsmouth, died at the city’s Queen Alexandra Hospital on Tuesday after being tested for the virus four days earlier.

Her mother Tracey Halliday said the GCSE student at Portsmouth Academy was a talented kickboxer and aspiring musician.

She said: “She was a loving girl and she had a lot of friends. She was very active, she loved going out and spending time with her friends and loved spending time with her siblings.

“Growing up, she became a beautiful young woman, always eager to help others, always there for everyone. It’s heartbreaking because your kids are always supposed to outlive you, and that’s the one thing I can’t get over.

Ms Halliday revealed that her daughter first developed flu-like symptoms before having a PCR test which gave a positive result. Jorja then began a period of self-isolation with them.

However, Ms Halliday said Jorja struggled to eat on Sunday. On Monday, she couldn’t eat at all because of her sore throat.

Ms Halliday said she contacted a doctor who prescribed antibiotics for her, but when Jorja’s condition worsened she was seen by a doctor who said her heart rate was double what it should. to be and that she was taken to the hospital. Preliminary results from the hospital’s medical examiner indicated that Jorja had Covid myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart caused by the virus.

“They realized how bad it was and I was still allowed to touch her, hold her hand, hug her and everything,” Ms. Halliday said.

“They allowed me that. I am at the point where I cannot understand that it has happened. I was with her all the time.

Ms Halliday said doctors put her daughter on a ventilator, but it failed to stabilize her heart rate.

She added, “They worked as well as I think they could medically, but couldn’t save her. She got the best care, I know they did everything they could to save her.

Ms Halliday said Jorja had no known underlying medical conditions. She added, “She was going to have the jab on Tuesday.

“But because she tested positive on Saturday, she was isolating herself. When her isolation period was over, she was going to get it. The day she died was the day she would have had it done.

It’s rare to die from Covid if you’re under 18 and have no underlying health issues, but a few teenagers in England have died after testing positive for Covid.

Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab, from Brixton in south London, died at the age of 13 in March last year after testing positive for the virus. In February, a 16-year-old boy with no underlying condition was recorded as having died from the virus.
