An Israeli teenager died of persistent health complications on Saturday after falling ill from COVID-19.
The 16-year-old was not vaccinated and had no medical problems. He had been hospitalized at Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Petah Tikva after being brought there from another hospital two weeks ago.
The hospital had treated the teenager with an ECMO machine for pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (PIMS), a rare disease that develops in some children after exposure to the coronavirus.
The boy has been identified in the media as Aden Jamal Fayumi, a resident of the central town of Jaljulia.
The death is believed to be the first death recorded by PIMS in Israel. About 100 cases of PIMS have been recorded in Israel since the syndrome was first reported, according to the Haaretz daily.
Fayumi’s death came two days after a 6-month-old baby was hospitalized in serious condition with symptoms of PIMS, including persistent fever and severe inflammation.

“There are quite a few children in the country with PIMS and quite a few of them are on ventilators. It is a serious illness. I think we are seeing an increase in PIMS in recent weeks, ”Dr Ofer Schiller from the hospital told the Ynet news site.
Schiller said the teenager’s condition was unstable and expressed concern about connecting patients to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines for long periods of time. Machines do the work of a person’s heart and lungs to help them recover from severe respiratory illness.
“Anyone who is on ECMO can also suffer from complications from the ECMO itself and not just the disease. The inflammatory response is something difficult to manage, ”he said.
The doctor did not say what he believed to be the cause of the increase in PIMS cases.
In recent weeks, Israel has seen a record number of patients on ECMO machines, even as the fourth wave of the pandemic appears to be receding.
The number of coronavirus patients hospitalized in serious condition fell to 460 on Friday, the lowest number in nearly two months.
