MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – State and county health officials said more than 170 people became ill as a result of an outbreak on Big Island on Lake Minnetonka on July 4.
The Hennepin County Public Health Authorities and the Minnesota Department of Health provided an update on the investigation at a press conference held on Friday afternoon.
Although health officials are not able to identify the pathogen at the root of the disease, they can confirm however that an outbreak has occurred. They say that it is possible that they never know the exact cause.
The investigators interviewed more than 200 people and learned that more than 172 people had symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.
They say that there is no threat going on because the disease is specifically related to the July 4th rally. Authorities report that most Big Island diseases lasted about 24 to 48 hours. Although the epidemic affected a large slice of age, the victims averaged between 25 and 30 years of age.
Health officials encourage people to adopt good hygiene habits when visiting the lake, for example not using the lake as a bathroom, washing hands and showering before and after entering the lake .
