1,721 new cases of COVID-19, 19 more virus-linked deaths reported, public health officials say

19 new virus-related deaths and 1,721 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the state since Saturday, according to daily figures released by the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

A total of 195,545 Oklahomans have tested positive for COVID-19 and the total number of virus-related deaths has risen to 1,736, the state’s health department said on Saturday. So far, 161,955 Oklahomans have recovered from the virus with an additional 2,061 cases considered recovered since Saturday. Health officials said cured means the patient has not been hospitalized or died and 14 days have passed since symptoms or report first appeared.

OSDH says there are 31,854 active cases in the state, a decrease of 359 cases since Saturday.

On July 15, Governor Kevin Stitt said he had tested positive for COVID-19, making him the first governor in the country to test positive for the virus. He has since posted video updates regarding his health and quarantine.

Oklahoma reported its first child death from the virus on July 12. The child was the 13-year-old daughter of a soldier stationed at Fort Sill.

Shortly after the girl’s death was reported, State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister recommended that all Oklahomians wear masks to allow schools to reopen safely in the fall.

On June 30, Stitt wore a face mask and “strongly encouraged” Oklahomans to follow CDC guidelines for face masks.

On April 28, Stitt said anyone wishing to take a COVID-19 test could do so even if they were not showing symptoms.
