LEE COUNTY, Florida – Eighteen people died in Lee Health hospitals yesterday, August 30, making Monday the deadliest day in the COVID-19 pandemic for the hospital system. Only one of the deceased patients was vaccinated.
The grim milestone comes as the COVID-19 Delta variant continues to spread and send more people to hospital.
As of Tuesday, August 31, Lee Health was caring for 111 COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit and 92 COVID-19 patients were on ventilators.
“We know a lot of them won’t be going home,” a spokesperson for Lee Health said in a press release. “Most of these deaths could have been prevented with vaccination. Vaccination lowers your risk of getting very sick or being hospitalized and further decreases your chances of needing ventilator support. “
There are currently 626 people sick with COVID-19 in Lee Health hospitals. Of these patients, 14 are children treated at the Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Lee Health is currently operating at 99% of its bed capacity.
Since the start of the pandemic, 927 have died from COVID-19 in Lee Health hospitals. Lee Health officials recommend COVID-19 vaccines for anyone 12 years of age and older.
If you want to get vaccinated, go to the Community Walk-In Vaccination Clinic, located inside the Gulf Coast Medical Center. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the vaccine is free.
