YOUNGSTOWN – Two men have been brought to justice on several counts following the February 20 kidnapping of a woman from a South Side home. They are accused of taking her to a wooded area on the East Side and torturing her.
Police were called to the 2000 Warwick Avenue block for an injured woman asking for help and saw she had serious injuries.
The woman said she was kidnapped from a house on Judson Avenue on the south side, severely beaten, raped and thrown into the woods on Nelson Avenue in the Sharon Line neighborhood to the east. She went to a house in Warwick for help, she said.
She was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. A police report gives no information about the victim.
Police arrested Janarvis L. Roberts, 26, at his home at 561 Cambridge Ave. on September 30 after serving a search warrant at his home that morning. He was taken to the Youngstown Police Department and Mahoning County Jail.
The kidnapping and torture are apparently what prompted Youngstown Police and the FBI to execute search warrants at Roberts’ home and a house on Judson Avenue on September 30. Two SWAT teams also assisted the police with the search warrants.
Captain Jason Simon, the city’s police chief of detectives, declined to discuss the case they were investigating when they served the search warrants – saying only that the FBI and SWAT teams have were called because of the “serious nature of the crime”.
During the search, detectives removed bags of evidence and a box, also marked as evidence, for a Cambridge House long gun.
The police department did not release a report on the February 20 incident until Thursday, after The Vindicator requested it.
Roberts was arraigned Monday in Youngstown City Court on three counts of criminal assault and one count of kidnapping and aggravated threat. He returns for a preliminary hearing at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Magistrate Meghan Brundege ordered her detention in lieu of a $ 1 million bond.
Farren McClendon, 42, of East Judson Avenue, surrendered to police on Monday in the case. He was arraigned Wednesday in Youngstown City Court on three counts of complicity in criminal assault and single counts of kidnapping and complicity in aggravated threat.
Brundege ordered that he be held in jail in lieu of $ 750,000 bail. He returns to court for his preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
