A Virginia child under 10 has died from COVID-19, a health official has confirmed. The death came just days after a 10-year-old girl from Virginia also died after contracting the virus.
Larry Hill, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), confirmed the death of the unidentified child Thursday morning to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, but provided no further information.
The child’s death came just days after 10-year-old Teresa Sperry died after contracting the virus.
According to Teresa’s mother, Nicole Sperry, the child was assigned to help her sick classmates at the Hillpoint Elementary School Nursing Office. She said parents who allowed their sick children to come to school put her daughter’s health at risk and claimed it ultimately led to her death, according to her Facebook page.

When the school announced Teresa’s death, the division superintendent included that parents should advise students to wash their hands and avoid touching their mouth and nose, among other preventative measures to reduce the burden. spread of the virus, according to a letter shared on social media.

Nicole Sperry took to Facebook in response to the elementary school’s statement.
“My beautiful daughter was taken from me because people are too selfish to care about what might happen to others,” she wrote in a Facebook post, later adding: “We wore our masks. because there are too many in our tribe who are at risk. My daughter was not in danger. And now she is gone. “
Sperry urged others to “wear a fucking mask, get the shot” and practice social distancing to honor his late daughter.

Virginian-Pilot, a Norfolk-based store, reported that more COVID-19 pediatric patients have been admitted to the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Virginia compared to any previous month in the pandemic.
According to the health department, the two pediatric deaths bring the total number of child deaths from COVID-19 in Virginia to 13, including 12 in 2021.
