According to court documents, two men have been charged after allegedly scamming major US airlines over $ 300,000 as part of a lost baggage program, court documents show.
Donmonick Martin and Pernell Anthony Jones Jr., both from Louisiana, are accused of carrying out the scam. Jones has reportedly submitted more than 180 bogus lost baggage claims, the documents show.
The claims were sent to American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, asking for a total reimbursement of more than $ 550,000.
As part of the scheme, Jones would take commercial flights under false names and then claim his luggage had been lost, although he did not check in a bag.
Upon submitting claims, Jones would then provide carriers with a list of high-value items that were allegedly in the lost bags, ensuring that the airline would agree to pay the maximum refund of $ 3,500.
To evade detection, Jones would use the addresses of his friends and associates to receive reimbursement checks from airlines. Martin has allowed Jones to use his home address on at least three occasions, according to the documents.
Jones and Martin are charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Jones faces up to 20 years and Martin up to five years if convicted.
