20 more cases of the coronavirus have been reported in Maine, health officials said on Monday.
Monday’s report brings the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 4,356. Of those, 3,910 were confirmed positive, while 446 were classified as “probable cases,” according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The agency revised Sunday’s cumulative total to 4,336 from 4,335, meaning there was an increase of 21 from the previous day’s report, state data showed. As the Maine CDC continues to investigate previously reported cases, it is determined that some are not cases of coronavirus or coronavirus not involving Mainers. These are removed from the state running total.
New cases have been reported in Androscoggin (3), Cumberland (1), Kennebec (2), Knox (1), Penobscot (5) and York (9) counties, according to state data.
No new deaths were reported on Monday, leaving the statewide death toll at 131. Almost all of the deaths have been in Mainers over the age of 60.
So far, 409 Mainers have been hospitalized at one time with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Of these, six people are currently hospitalized, five in intensive care and one on a ventilator.
Meanwhile, 28 more people have recovered from the coronavirus, bringing total recoveries to 3,762. That means there are 463 active and “probable” cases in the state, up from 470 on Sunday.
A majority of the cases – 2,453 – have been in Mainers under the age of 50, while more cases have been reported in women than in men, according to the Maine CDC.
As of Monday, 237,644 test results were negative out of a total of 243,819. Just under 2.2% of all tests came back positive, according to data from the Maine CDC.
The coronavirus has hit hardest in Cumberland County, where 2,161 cases have been reported and the bulk of deaths from the virus – 70 – have been concentrated. It is one of four counties – the others are Androscoggin, Penobscot and York, with 594, 220 and 750 cases, respectively – where “community transmission” has been confirmed, according to the Maine CDC.
There are two criteria for establishing community transmission: at least 10 confirmed cases and at least 25 percent of these are neither related to known cases nor to travel. This second condition has not yet been “fulfilled” in other countries.
Other cases have been reported in Aroostook (37), Franklin (48), Hancock (46), Kennebec (181), Knox (29), Lincoln (35), Oxford (59), Piscataquis (7), Sagadahoc ( 59), Somerset (46), Waldo (69) and Washington (15) counties.
As of Monday evening, the coronavirus sickened 5,734,075 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands, and caused 177,118 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University of Medicine. .
