Honda sticks to compact sedans.

While some automakers have left the segment in favor of SUVs, Honda will present an all-new Civic next spring, which it previewed with a concept revealed on Twitch on Tuesday.

The Civic 2022 has an updated design closer to the style of the current Honda Accord, with a low, wide stance and large windows for better visibility compared to the slit bunker design seen on many cars today.

The interior, shown only as a sketch, features a simple, horizontal instrument panel inspired by the early Civics, complete with a digital dashboard, tablet-style infotainment system, and Honeycomb trim to better conceal the air vents.

Honda did not specify which powertrains will be offered, but added that there would be sporty Si and Type-R models with a four-door sedan, which will be built alongside the sedan in the U.S. Current sedans are imported from a factory in the UK, which is slated to close next year. The two-door Civic Coupe, however, was discontinued.

The Civic was the seventh best-selling vehicle in the United States in the first three quarters of 2020 and second only to the Toyota Camry among non-SUVs and trucks. However, Honda cites data that shows it beats the Camry among retail customers after factoring in fleet sales – like those to rental car companies -.

Although billed as a concept, the styling of the Honda and Acura show cars is generally representative of the production models that follow.
