2,700 use ‘back door’ to line up for COVID vaccinations

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) – About 2,700 people were able to use an online scheduling vulnerability to in turn enroll for COVID-19 vaccinations, according to a Detroit-area health care system.

Beaumont Health said it has determined that a user is publicly sharing an unauthorized path for scheduling.

“This has allowed 2,700 people to ‘cut the line’,” the eight hospital health system said in a statement on Sunday. “Beaumont cancels all appointments that have taken the unauthorized path.”

“These appointments violate the ethical distribution framework created by Beaumont based on the state of Michigan’s mandatory vaccination guidelines,” said Hans Keil, senior vice president of Beaumont Health and chief information officer.

The problem will not affect properly scheduled vaccination appointments, he added.

Beaumont’s information technology team detected and stopped unusual activity on its Epic electronic medical record system on Saturday. Personal medical records were not compromised and users were unable to access hospital records, Beaumont said.
