29 communities in Worcester County to be treated for EEE virus

There are currently 36 critical-risk, 42 ​​high-risk and 115 moderate-risk communities of EEE in Massachusetts.

Several communities in Norfolk and Middlesex counties will also be covered this week.

"Even though the temperatures are cool, it is extremely important for us to remember that the mosquito season is not over and that we must all continue to take steps to prevent mosquito bites", said Commissioner for Public Health Monica Bharel, MD, MPH. "Use an insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants to reduce exposed skin and stay indoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active."

So far this year, Massachusetts has had seven human cases of EEE, including one death. Nine cases of EEE have also been confirmed this year in animals, including eight horses and a goat.

"We continue to urge the public to protect themselves from this disease by using a mosquito repellent and taking other precautions. For people living in high-risk and critical areas, reorganizing outdoor activities at night, "said MDAR Commissioner John Lebeaux. "In addition to these precautions, we will conduct additional aerial sprays and support the use of ground sprays with trucks to reduce the number of infected adult mosquitoes that have flown at this stage of the season. "
