CHICAGO (AP) – Teenage parents of a newborn at the top of a trash can in Chicago face charges of attempted murder and a grandmother of the child is accused of having lied to the police to find the baby.

Chicago police have announced that his 16-year-old mother and father are scheduled to appear in a juvenile court on Friday.

Police said the girl had given birth, wrapped the boy in a towel and placed him at the top of a trash can on Tuesday in the northwestern part of Chicago. They say the boy put the baby in a bag before calling his mother, aged 37, who took her to a fire station.

She is charged with disorderly conduct for falsely reporting how she ended up with the child. The Associated Press does not name it to avoid identifying teens.

The baby was subsequently hospitalized.
