CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa Department of Public Health wishes to warn people against a hepatitis C strain in the state.
The researchers say that the virus has been diagnosed in more than 18,000 Iowans since 2000, but that the number of Iowans unaware of their infection is perhaps greater.
Experts say that untreated, hepatitis C can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer.
In addition, the CDC said that hepatitis A infections had increased by nearly 300% in adults in the United States in recent years.
CDC researchers analyzed cases reported between 2013 and 2018. They also found an unprecedented outbreak of vaccine-preventable disease.
Experts say the United States has a vaccination schedule in place to provide long-term protection against various diseases.
