DETROIT (WXYZ) – Three people have died after a shootout on a major highway in Detroit. This happened on I-96 near the Southfield freeway overnight.

The highway was closed but has since reopened near Schaefer and the Grand River where the shooting took place.

Michigan State Police tell us three people died – two as a result of the shooting and a third person who died after being hit by a vehicle while trying to flee the scene.

A man and a woman in one of the vehicles were shot dead, and another suspect in a different vehicle is the one who died trying to flee the scene.

Metro Detroit has seen a major spike in highway shootings since last summer, with dozens in the area.

Investigators say these are simply separate and unrelated incidents.

We’re working to learn more about the shoot and will provide updates as we get them.
