PlayStation has announced the next generation of its PSVR headset – but it won’t necessarily be called PlayStation VR 2, and it won’t come in 2021. Sony has confirmed that the PSVR 2 will come to PS5 and “connect to PS5 with just one cord to simplify setup and improve ease of use, while still enabling a high fidelity viewing experience. It’s described as “a next-generation virtual reality system that improves everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and capturing.” No images of the device have been published.

The headset will also accompany the introduction of a new PSVR controller (apparently replacing the PS Move wands), “which will incorporate some of the key features of the DualSense wireless controller, with an emphasis on excellent ergonomics.”

However, the headset will not be available this year: “There is still a lot of development going on for our new virtual reality system, so it will not be launched in 2021,” the blog post read. “But we wanted to provide this first update to our fans, as the development community has started working on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.”

In an interview with GQ, SIE CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that there is no official title for the headset and that the development kits are “about to be released.” Ryan also described it as “a whole new VR format for PS5”. Ryan says we’ll learn more about the new helmet later this year.

Working on a PSVR successor has been a bit of an open secret thanks to reports and patents showcasing PlayStation’s investments in this area. Over the years, Sony has filed patents for VR-compatible eyeglasses, a potential new PSVR controller (which included the search for a Valve Index-style controller, a patent allowing viewers to play with gamers in VR. , and much more, and job postings over the past year have pointed out that PlayStation is working on a “next-generation virtual reality display.”
