Three women and a man were found dead in an apartment complex in Ohio, where several shots were fired, police said Monday. No suspects have been identified.

A man called 911 at around 10 pm On Sunday, he reportedly arrived at the North Cincinnati suburb to find four injured family members, according to West Chester Township police.

"They are on the ground and bleed," said the caller, often suffocating and gasping for breath as the dispatcher struggled to get details from him. "They bleed all."

Sometimes it can be heard on the audio 911 frantically screaming "Help!" apparently to the neighbors of the Lakefront at West Chester.

The cantonal police chief, Joel Herzog, said at a press conference Monday that it was too early in the investigation to suggest a motive. It will be up to the Butler County coroner to determine the cause of death and reveal the identity of the victims, Herzog said.

Herzog said that it did not seem that anyone was attacked by the perpetrator (s), which the police were still trying to identify. They also interviewed family members and neighbors.

"It does not appear that the gunman is among the dead," Herzog said, adding that he did not think there was danger to the community. There was no lock in place at a nearby school, he said.

"He seems to be isolated," said Herzog.

He added that the victims all seem to have lived in the same apartment in the township, a growing suburban area about 32 km north of Cincinnati.

The man who called 911 provided little information on the call regarding what appeared to be happening. The caller spoke to the investigators, said Herzog. He confirmed that the appellant was a member of the family of the victims.

Police said it seemed like the family was preparing dinner when it was attacked and that there was smoke upon their arrival after preparing the abandoned meal.

Authorities said several agencies, including the State Highway Patrol, had participated in the investigation.

Police set up a perimeter around the apartment complex Monday morning and used police helicopters and K-9 units to search for a suspect.

Herzog said: "We are actively seeking all possible resources".
