A 13-year-old Kentucky cheerleader who died suddenly after being complained of feeling sick at a competition in February, was suffering from a streptococcal infection, said her parents. .
"Apparently, an underlying streptococcal infection has overwhelmed his immune system with little or no warning and catastrophic results," said Lilliana Schalck's family in a statement obtained by ABC News. "We would not wish this nightmare to anyone."
Schalck, a Grade 8 student at Highlands Middle School in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, was preparing to perform at a school competition in Columbus, Ohio on February 23, when 39, she told her teammates that she felt weak and that she felt her limbs.
The girl's father, Dan Schalck, told WCPO that he imagined that his daughter was perhaps suffering from dehydration or even worry about the upcoming performance.
The Schalck team called an ambulance and, upon arriving at a nearby hospital, she was quickly transferred from the emergency room to the intensive care unit. Her condition quickly deteriorated and she died about two hours after admission to the hospital.
According to the CDC, Streptococcus Bacteria can cause many different infections. Although some are common and relatively minor, such as strep throat, others are less common and can be serious or life threatening.
Following Schalck's autopsy findings, family members said they hoped that by talking about the cause of his death, they could "help prevent a similar result for someone." 39, one of them ".
