Residents of Alpena may have noticed an influx of K-9 police units scouring local roads as more than 300 dogs and their handlers took over the Alpena Combat Training Center this week.

As of Sunday, the site has hosted the annual training of the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers, the largest canine training and recertification event in the United States.

More than 330 teams from around 280 organizations, including Michigan Police Departments, spent the week training in bomb detection, tracking, suspect apprehension and other canine policing tasks . Some training scenarios have extended to the roads of the Alpena region.

The training, which ends Thursday, has been held at the CRTC annually since 2005, with the exception of last year.
