$ 33 million awarded to organizations in Virginia fighting domestic violence

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) – More than $ 33 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Justice have been awarded to 26 public and nonprofit organizations based in Virginia to fund programs to address violence against women. women, according to a federal prosecutor.

Acting U.S. Attorney Raj Parekh said in a press release Friday that the grants would provide essential funding and services to vulnerable communities, especially women, people with disabilities, and immigrants who are victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

The Department’s Office on Violence Against Women selected organizations from across the Eastern District of Virginia to receive funding through 42 separate grants. The money will allow organizations to better respond to a wide variety of needs and issues faced by victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Recipients include state government entities that provide services across the Commonwealth, as well as non-government organizations that provide technical training and assistance nationwide.

In addition, grants have been made to universities to address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking on campus.
