A multi-vehicle collision closed an intersection east of downtown Anchorage Thursday afternoon and resulted in police temporarily rerouting incoming traffic from the Glenn Expressway, police said.

The intersection of East Fifth Avenue and Airport Heights Drive was closed after an accident just before noon, police wrote in a declaration. The roads reopened Thursday evening.

Four people were taken to hospital with injuries, police spokeswoman Sunny Guerin said. The injuries did not appear to be life threatening, police said.

The intersection was closed during the afternoon while police investigated.

The offending driver was arrested, police said, but it was not immediately clear whether any charges or citations had been issued. Police did not immediately say how many vehicles were involved in the collision or how it happened.
