Almost 4% of Michigan residents aged 16 and over have received the COVID-19 vaccine so far, according to the latest figures released by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
A total of 368,844 doses of the vaccine were administered on Wednesday, the state’s coronavirus dashboard shows. This includes 315,972 first doses and 52,872 second doses.
The highest vaccination rates to date are found in the Upper Peninsula, where 5.4% of people aged 16 and over have received at least one dose of the vaccine. This compares to 3.1% in the Detroit subway.
The interactive map below shows the number of people per capita who have received at least one dose of the vaccine so far. Figures are based on the residence of the vaccine recipient versus where the vaccine was administered. You can hover your cursor over a county to see the underlying data. (Note: The number of first doses given includes those that also received a second dose.)
One reason for the higher vaccination rates in northern Michigan is that those areas have received more doses per capita, according to state data.
Region 8, the state district that covers the Upper Peninsula, received 122 doses per 1,000 people 16 years of age and older, double the 66 doses per 1,000 adults in southeast Michigan counties.
Public health officials have said vaccine allocations and administration will differ based on demographics.
“It’s important to note that counties are going to vary based on the numbers that fall under each of the priority groups, depending on the makeup of their businesses, industries, age of residents and things like that,” he said. said Wendy Hirschenberger, head of the Grand Traverse County Department of Health.
Currently, those eligible for vaccines include people 65 years of age and older, as well as healthcare workers, teachers, first responders and correctional officers. This means that counties with large elderly populations, as well as regional health care centers and prisons, have more residents on the priority list.

Other highlights from the latest data:
- Michigan has received 831,150 doses of the vaccine to date. Of this total, 245,100 were allocated to the vaccination program for residents and staff of long-term care facilities. As of Tuesday, January 12, 52,744 had been vaccinated through this program.
- Of the remaining 586,050 doses available, 316,100 were administered on Wednesday. It’s about 54%.
- More than half of the people who received a vaccine received it in the past eight days, showing that the pace of the program has picked up significantly over the past week.
