The city's health department announced Tuesday that the number of measles cases in the city had reached 466 since the start of the outbreak in October.

This is an increase of 43 cases since the last report published by the city on April 29th.

This new count includes two children living in Sunset Park, whose parents have called for religious exemptions to circumvent vaccination requirements in public schools in the city.

None of the children belong to a family in the city's Orthodox Jewish community, which has been hard hit by the epidemic.

A city source confirmed that the children were probably infected by going to the very orthodox Borough Park neighborhood, which was one of the hot spots of the Williamsburg outbreak.

Updated figures released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday indicate that the number of infections recorded in April has reached 151, making it the worst month since the beginning of the year-to-year epidemic latest.

The cities of Williamsburg and Borough Park now account for 448 of the 466 measles cases reported in the five boroughs, over 96%.

The city authorities reacted by submitting five Williamsburg postal codes to a mandatory vaccination order and launching a major public health campaign to counter unfounded theories of anti-vaccine conspiracy in the island's Orthodox areas.

Parents who do not comply must face a $ 1,000 fine.
