44 new deaths, 1,355 new cases in Orange County on January 31 – Orange County Register

Forty-four new deaths were reported by the county on Sunday, bringing the total number of COVID deaths to 3,062. More than a third of the reported deaths, or 1,187, occurred in January.

Data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or collected during case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death on record was on January 22.

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 1,355 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, January 31, bringing the cumulative total in the county to 232,391 cases since follow-up began.

The county also reported 1,412 patients at local hospitals, 30 fewer than the previous report. There are 392 patients listed in intensive care units on Sunday, two fewer than in Saturday’s report. Inpatient totals are at about the same level as in mid-December.

An estimated 21,578 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the past 14 days.

The county update says 2,681,673 tests have been conducted for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 16,044 new tests since the previous report.

Of the 3,062 cumulative deaths reported from the virus, 830 were qualified residents of nursing homes, 329 were in assisted living residences, one was in prison and five were homeless.

The distribution of deaths by age in the county is as follows:

  • 85 and over: 33.96% (1040, over 14)
  • 75-84: 23.22% (711, plus 7)
  • 65-74: 19.37% (593, + 10)
  • 55-64: 13.26% (406, plus 5)
  • 45-54: 6.56% (201, + 2)
  • 35-44: 2.32% (71, plus 6)
  • 25 to 34: 1.08% (33)
  • 18-24 years old: 0.2% (6)
  • 17 and under: 0.03% (1)

An estimated 175,513 people recovered from the virus on Sunday. The number of people who have recovered is based on the cumulative number of previous 28 days.

Data released each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials say. Further information may become available as investigations of individual cases are completed.
