The Poway Unified School District has announced that 49 of its high school students are among 16,000 students nationwide to be named semifinalists in the 2022 National Scholarship Program.
As semi-finalists, they will advance in the competition which will award around 7,500 national scholarships with a combined value of $ 30 million next spring, according to program officials. While around 95% of semi-finalists are expected to be named finalists, only around half of these will win a scholarship and the Merit Scholar title.
Poway Unified students named semi-finalists are:
Lycée Del Norte – Sara Beniwal, Madeleine Boedeker, Hannah Chen, Sunny Fan, Bryant Jin, David Kim, Justin Li, Jasmine Lu, Eyaad Mir, Aashi Mittal, Kyle Myint, Saurav Nagpal, Jeffrey Sheng, Sanya Sitlani, Anthony Vo, Rebecca Wei and Sarah Xie.
Homeschool – Paola Simi.
Mt. Carmel High School – Daniel Kim, Kavya Ramesh, Danielle Sim, Kakyleigh Sim and Stacy Widyono.
Poway High School – Adam Major and Ryan Trust.
Rancho Bernardo High School – Dain Cho, Aniket Garg, Ashley Huang, Herman Malik, Aya Nadalin, Krishna Rastogi, Emily Shanmugam, Joshua Sinclair, Trista Wang and Jonathan Zhou.
Westview High School – Sattwik Chakraborty, Sarah Dong, Samuel Fong, Wei Ting Hsu, Ethan Lin, Rayyan Nasser, Annabel Ng, Michael Pham, Aakarsh Vermani, Jayden Xia, Jehyeok Yeon, Andrew Zhang, Charles Zhang and Ethan Zhang.
To be named semi-finalists, students had to register for the scholarship program by passing the pre-qualifying test for the SAT / National Merit Scholarships 2020 during their junior year. Semifinalists make up less than 1% of U.S. high school students, program officials said.
To achieve finalist status, students will be judged on their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and other honors and awards received. Semi-finalists must also receive a recommendation from a high school official, write an essay, and obtain SAT or ACT scores confirming their performance on the qualifying test.
The scholarships presented next spring will be sponsored by companies, trade organizations, colleges and universities.
