Here's who distinguished himself in the pre-season win of the 49ers 27-17 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

GOOD

  1. QB Jimmy Garoppolo. He showed he was ready to start the first game of the regular season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Played with confidence and did not launch any interception. Some of Garoppolo's shots were slightly behind his receivers, but he completed 10 of the 15 assists and generally made good decisions. His only bad decision was made towards the end of the first half, when the 49ers had the ball at the Chiefs' 19-yard line, facing the seconds and three. Garoppolo lined up in the shotgun, received the capture, stepped back, stared at Dante Pettis, who was triple covered, and threw him the ball anyway. Garoppolo was lucky that the leaders just break the pass without removing it. He should never have a triple cover, especially if he throws at Pettis, because Pettis will not make a disputed catch. If Garoppolo did not know it before, he should now. He learns.
  2. HC Kyle Shanahan. Prepare Garoppolo to succeed and help him regain his confidence. He called six assists for Garoppolo after not calling any against the Broncos. Also called just an empty training after calling three last Monday night. Shanahan seemed to be sending a message to Garoppolo over the past two weeks, putting him repeatedly in difficult situations. The message was clear: "You're not as good as you think, Jimmy. You have not arrived. Listen to me, your coach. Jimmy seems to have understood the message. Good for him and good for Shanahan.
  3. WR Deebo Samuel. Played with the starters and caught two passes from Garoppolo – a six-yard and a 21-yard. Samuel is fast and he likes violence. He is currently the top receiver on the 49ers and should start week 1. Do not waste time.
  4. WR Richie James Jr. It can be said that the second best wide receiver on the 49ers. Led the team with four catches for 66 yards. James is a threat to go deep and run with the ball after take, and he is hard and fearless. He will almost certainly make the team and play in games.
  5. RB Matt Breida. Averaged 6.3 yards per stroke and a 20 yard touchdown shot. Breida is undoubtedly the 49ers' best runner, but he is small and fragile. It needs quality backups to keep it fresh and healthy.
  6. RB Jeff Wilson Jr. A quality backup and the most powerful rider of the 49ers. Wilson Jr. had two touchdowns, including one seven-yard touchdown. If the 49ers eliminate Wilson Jr., another team will certainly sign it, which means the 49ers should find a way to keep it. What a shame they cut him off and kept C. J. Beathard in his place.
  7. TE Ross Dwelley. He dropped his first two targets, but rebounded and caught two passes from Garoppolo, including a 23-yard pass. It's nice to see a young, inexperienced player overcome a couple of bad games. Dwelley is the second best receiver among the 49ers after George Kittle, who missed the match with a mysterious calf injury.
  8. From Arik Armstead. Saved half of a bag during the first half. Armstead is at its peak, in excellent shape and in the contract year. We should see his best.
  9. DE Damontre Moore. Registered two bags. Already a better NFL pass than Solomon Thomas.

The not so good

  1. WR Dante Pettis. Played in the fourth quarter of a preseason game, it can not start or even be part of the final roster. Pettis has not been one of the 49ers' top six receivers since the start of the camp – he has always struggled. And he no longer seems interested in returning bedbugs. He just takes even when he has room to run. The 49ers must trade Pettis as long as it still has commercial value. He's not one of their best 53 players.
  2. RB Tevin Coleman. On average 2.1 yards per race and two yards per jack. Seemed to hesitate before hitting the holes and not generating yards after contact. That's how he played during the training camp. Fortunately, the 49ers have Breida.
  3. LT Joe Staley. Gave his second pre-season bag – this time to Frank Clark. Staley starts to look old. Maybe the 49ers should not have extended his contract this season.
  4. Solomon Thomas. Made no impact.
  5. CB Richard Sherman. Gave two catches for 25 yards. Seemed slower than last season.
  6. CB Ahkello Witherspoon. Gave two catches for 19 yards. Seemed exactly the same as last season, which is not so good. The 49ers will need Nick Bosa and Dee Ford to give Witherspoon a better look.
