It looks like the 49ers are set to acquire a quarterback at some point in this year’s draft. Even if they aren’t aiming for a long-term starter, they need to find a proper backup for Jimmy Garoppolo. There is a scenario where they don’t draft a quarterback, but instead use a pick to acquire one in a trade. A simulation project at Pro Football Focus performs this move for San Francisco.
In this PFF sham, the 49ers give Miami the No. 12 overall pick in Miami for sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after the Dolphins took on Justin Fields of Ohio State with their third overall pick. acquired from the Texans in the trade of Laremy Tunsil.
This is not an acquisition that came out of nowhere. This simulation has three quarters in the top three picks and five in the top nine. Given the 49ers’ multitude of needs, it’s hard to see them parting with a ton of interim capital to go up and grab a caller in case the market for them is hyper-competitive early on in the project.
A trade of the No.12 pick for a 23-year-old former top-five selection that is accurate across all three levels of the passing game makes a lot of sense if the 49ers prioritize position in this year’s draft.
However, there is a big question mark as to whether Tagovailoa is the caller of the signal on which they would pass the No.12 pick. He’s gone 6-3 in nine starts for the Dolphins as a rookie this season. His numbers weren’t very impressive with a 64.1% completion rate, 6.3 yards per attempt, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. There’s also the fact that he’s been benched multiple times in favor of journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The Dolphins organization has been supportive of Tagovailoa and its future development, but it would be easy to see how the 49ers might be wary of this draft when they are ready to fight for the Super Bowls.
