The San Francisco 49ers have lost vice president of player personnel Martin Mayhew, who left to become general manager in Washington. 49ers general manager John Lynch could look to Washington for additional help within his own front office and to replace Mayhew, who was considered one of his best lieutenants.

Chris Russell of Sports Illustrated told 106.7 The Fan in the Washington DC area that the 49ers were among the teams expressing interest in Washington football vice-president Kyle Smith (m / t at Patrick tulini), who has worked for the organization for 10 years and has overseen the latest versions of the team.

“I’ve heard Washington is not going to stand in their way,” Russell told 106.7 The Fan of a possible Washington sideways transfer to the 49ers.

Other teams that have reportedly shown interest in Smith are the Los Angeles Rams, Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders.

Smith, 36, started as a Boy Scout in Washington in 2011. He was promoted to Director of University Personnel in 2017 and then to his current position in 2020.

“News of Smith’s departure was described as ‘inevitable’ by a source Thursday night,” Russell wrote for SI. “Smith’s anticipated exit will likely be called a ‘mutual separation of paths’ between the one NFL organization he worked for.”
