The 49ers have had four practice sessions, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
They are still days away from putting on full towels for the first time since the end of last season.
What might a reasonable or rational person conclude after such a small sample size in a training camp?
Well, this is not necessarily the space of the reasonable and the rational.
This is our first installment of 49ers Overreactions for the 2021 season. .
Overreaction? Yes.
General manager John Lynch had a flawless approach to the 49ers selection of quarterback Trey Lance with the No.3 pick overall.
Lynch did all the homework. He communicated several times a day with head coach Kyle Shanahan. He’s turned it over to Shanahan, who knows exactly what he expects from a quarterback.
Ultimately, the player Shanahan said he wanted was also the player Lynch wanted.
The only FBS school that recruited Lance to play quarterback was Boise State – and they came on the scene far too late in the recruiting process.
But let’s not neglect the state of North Dakota. This program is as good as any in the country at producing NFL quarterbacks. The coaching staff at NDSU are very good including Randy Hedberg whose title is Associate Head Coach / Passing Coordinator / Quarterback Coach.
Before the draft, a longtime NFL scout told NBC Sports Bay Area: “What he (Lance) does in the pocket is so unique. . . Either it all comes so naturally to him, or he has the best coach in college football. “
The big schools missed Lance. It’s more of a bad reflection on the Big Ten schools (especially the University of Minnesota) than on Lance.
Obviously, an impressive opening at training camp is no guarantee of success. But it’s safe to assume that if the 49res had the ability to remake, they wouldn’t change a thing.
Overreaction? Yes.
The 49ers are well aware that no rookie quarterback has ever helped his team qualify for the Super Bowl.
Much like a 16 seed had never beaten a No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament before the University of Maryland, Baltimore County upset Virginia in 2018, one day a rookie will be go to a Super Bowl.
But, right now, the 49ers feel a lot more comfortable with Jimmy Garoppolo at the start of the season.
This is quite understandable. It also seems clear that Lance won’t be spending the entire season on the sidelines. There could be a weekly role for him in the offense before he finally becomes the starter. When that happens, it’s everyone’s guess.
The Colts, who have just over $ 10 million in salary cap space, are set to win this season. Carson Wentz is out indefinitely with a foot injury. But with Wentz already counting $ 20.4 million against the salary cap for this season, it doesn’t seem realistic that they would abandon draft picks for Garoppolo and assume his planned salary of $ 25 million for the coming season.
Overreaction? No.
What the hell was going on with Arden Key and the Raiders? From his appearance in the first four practices, it’s a puzzle that he only had three sacks in 37 career games in three seasons after the Raiders picked him in the third round.
Key is a talented guy. And he seems really motivated to get it right this season. Therefore, your statement is not an overreaction.
While I think Key will be part of the squad and win a rotating outside passer role, my vote for the team’s number 2 threat is Samson Ebukam.
Overreaction? Um, maybe not.
Javon Kinlaw, the 13th overall pick in 2020, has had a strong rookie season. He missed a few games late in the season with a knee condition that required cleaning up in January. The 49ers are taking him slowly to camp this summer. He only participated in individual exercises in the first four practices.
I don’t know if I would go so far as to say Kentavius Street is a better player, but I can understand what you are saying. I don’t think this is crazy talk.

Street was a player that caught my eye. He’s an impressive guy who seems to have a great outlook having played just 15 games since joining the league in 2018. It has been a struggle for him. Now it seems set up to have a big impact.
“My mindset every practice is to prove that I belong and to prove to myself that I am the baddest man on the pitch,” Street said.
Excessive reaction: No.
Mike McGlinchey added 25 pounds in the offseason to handle the bull rush. He doesn’t think he’s sacrificing his mobility, which suits him so well in the racing game.
McGlinchey is entering his fourth season in the NFL. He’s still a few years away from peaking so it would be a big disappointment if he doesn’t have his best season yet.
Overreaction? Yes.
The t-shirts made after the 2021 NFL Draft because, tough as it was, we got away a little bit unscathed.
As for the training camp. . . let’s not start celebrating our touchdown at the 30-yard line.
