Patrick Judis Cincy Jungle was kind enough to take the time to answer five questions about this week's game between the 49ers and the Bengals. Let's go inside.
Andy Dalton was sacked five times against the Seahawks. The 49ers have massively improved their pass, and this has paid off. Week 1. Are you worried about this meeting, or was there more to do than the score?
The Bengals were extremely meager in offensive attack against Seattle. Our first-round pick, Jonah Williams, is currently on the injured list and Cordy Glenn has been the victim of a concussion. In addition, Bobby Hart remains the weakest link in the line of attack at the right tackle. If Glenn can not go this week, Cincinnati will probably try to do what they did against the Seahawks. They will throw quick passes, screens, or use a wrong direction to try to give Andy Dalton more time in the pocket.
The reason he was probably fired so often was because the Seahawks had a great game plan to stop what the Bengals were trying to do in the running. Dalton has pitched the ball more than 50 times, and when you will have as much chance of your quarterback being sacked at some point.
John Ross was superb Sunday. How far will it be against the 49ers and do you think the offensive will be successful Sunday?
You talk to one of John Ross's greatest believers. So you can imagine how satisfying it was to see him go on Sunday. During Ross' first two seasons in Cincinnati, it was clear that there was a gap between him and Marvin Lewis. Ross was often sitting on the bench as soon as he lost a pass or made a mistake. Then last season, he was used more as a lure to help other guys fight their way under the roads.
This coaching staff knows how to use the threat of its speed to keep it constantly open. They realize that if a defender aligns within 10 yards of him, they can run a screen or give him a quick pass for easy yards. It sounds simple, but Cincinnati has never done that with Ross. That being said, he still has some unacceptable drops, but it was a very good start to the season for him.
In terms of what this team has to do to succeed in attack, Joe Mixon has to go. The Bengals have been forced to air the balloon steadily because the Seahawks have almost never left their basic staff. Dalton was very successful, but even when the Bengals tried to run, they simply could not. It will not always win games. Even though it is only short passes for Mixon, it must be involved. It should be noted that Mixon is struggling with an ankle injury, but he is supposed to play. If he does not, you can replace his name by Giovani Bernard.
What were your general impressions of first year head coach Zac Taylor?
Zac Taylor absolutely seems to be the guy for the job. He's so much more open with fans and the media, and he's a player coach. My biggest complaint was to get the ball back and put it on defense towards the end of the match, but it's rather a philosophical difference. The team I watched on Sunday, even though it's essentially the same players as last season, seemed like a totally different team from the 2018 edition. The offensive looked like something from this decade, and the defense actually created stops and put pressure on the quarterback. The teams will be surprised by the enthusiasm of this team.
Who are the protagonists of the Bengal defense that fans of the 49ers should know?
All that the Bengal defense does is starting with Geno Atkin's ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Even if he draws only double teams, it opens the way for everyone. The other key players happen to be very young guys. In high school you have security Jessie Bates, who has been discreetly excellent coverage. The corner half William Jackson is their best cover corner. On the defensive line, expect to hear the name of Sam Hubbard a lot. He had a strong rookie season, but he really stood out against the Seahawks with ten tackles and two sacks a day. By the way, Carl Lawson could also make noise by pressing the smuggler.
What is your score forecast and why?
The Bengals should have a pretty energetic opening game at home. If last week's game was not close, fans would probably not be so inclined to go, but I think the level will be high for Cincinnati standards. I think the teams are still trying to figure out what to expect from the Bengals, so the 49ers could take some time to make adjustments. This could lead to a quick lead for Cincinnati.
What will probably decide the game is whether the Bengals are able to save time while moving the ball into the current game. If they can do it, Cincinnati could send the 49ers back to San Francisco with a tight loss.
