No matter which teams try to get Deshaun Watson away from the Houston Texans, the price will be astronomical.
Watson, 25, has just led the NFL and is in the prime of his life. He’s one of the top four quarterbacks in the league and will only get better, especially if given the right talent and training around him.
The 49ers are one of many teams that have been seen as a potential landing point for Watson if the Texans start receiving offers (they shouldn’t). The cost of trading for a 25-year-old generational quarterback must start at three first-round picks. The Texans also reportedly want two young defensive stars, which in the case of the 49ers would put Nick Bosa in the business.
It’s something that NBC Sports’ Chris Simms doesn’t think San Francisco would be ready to do.

But how many wins does Bosa add in total? Take the injury-ravaged 49ers in 2020. Hadn’t Bosa torn his ACL in week 2 and played a full season, how many more wins do the 6-10 49ers have? A?
Now trade Watson at the quarterback. Upgrading the Garoppolo / Nick Mullens / CJ Beathard trio to Watson, an elite caller, almost certainly gets the 49ers wins over the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and Washington football team, bringing them to 9-7 and a playoff berth despite their injury rash.

The quarterback is the most valuable position in the sport. Players like Watson come once in a generation and are almost never available for trading at 25.
Watson could make the difference between the 49ers by capitalizing on their Super Bowl window or watching it close without going back and forth.
If Bosa and three first-round picks put you on Watson’s peak, I don’t think it should be a big discussion.
