Advertising blocking is an essential experience for many people. Bad publicity can ruin left and right experiences, especially when surfing the web, playing games or watching video content. Of course, there is a perverse aspect needed in all of this, but people still use advertising blockers anyway. There are several ways to get an ad unit on your Android device with at least some capacity. The most complete ad blockers require root or somewhat difficult configurations.
Advertising blocking apps are usually not in the Play Store. You can read here to find out why. Thus, most of the applications in the list require third-party download and installation. We had no problem doing it, but you can be a little worried. In addition, more and more sites and services allow payment instead of advertising. We recommend overblocking ads because it allows content creators that you like to continue to do while earning a living. Just a thought.
AdAway is a simple ad blocker application. It uses a modified host file to send all ad requests to 12.0.0.1. In other words, the request is not going anywhere and you do not see any ads. The application supports modified or custom host files or you can download a basic one from the application itself. Host files are stored in a read-only portion of the Android system. This means that root is required for this one. You can donate if you want, but all the application works for free. The only two disadvantages are that you have to download them from F-Droid, not from the Play Store, and that you need root access. Root users can still modify the host files themselves without an application if they wish.
Adblocker Plus is without a doubt the most popular advertising blocker app on the list. It works on both rooted and non-rooted devices, although non-root users have extra work to do. The application runs in the background and filters web traffic almost identically to that of its web browser extension. Basically, you open it once, you install it, then you run it alone in the background. It's just about everything. Tap the button to access the official website with instructions for installing and configuring Adblock Plus on rooted and unrooted devices.
AdGuard is a bit of a joker. We had not heard much about it before publishing this article, but it seemed to work well for us. The app blocks ads in the same way as Adblock Plus. AdGuard runs as a background service and filters web traffic. It works without root, but it requires a little extra configuration. It also keeps tabs on all of your web traffic, similar to applications such as GlassWire. You also get an aesthetic material design user interface to assemble everything. The free version blocks ads in web browsers only. The premium version costs $ 24.99 per month, but you also get the premium version of AdGuard for your Windows PC or Mac.
There are many browsers with ad-block. These browsers filter most of the ad traffic or at least the most offensive ad traffic. Google Chrome has blocked ad serving, but continues to show the least offensive ads to the viewer while leaving some to keep the sites still earning money. We recommend this as a happy medium (for obvious reasons). Brave Browser, Firefox Focus, Kiwi Browser, Samsung Browser are some examples of web browsers with ad blocking. Some others have ad blocking add-ons like Firefox and Dolphin Browser. Choose the one that you think will do the best for you.
Block This is not the most popular advertising blocker app on the list. However, it is efficient, open source and totally free. This application uses the same VPN style configuration as Adblock Plus and AdGuard. However, Block This uses DNS blocking instead of a filter. The developer claims that this method uses less battery than standard ad blocking applications because most of the work is done before the data reaches your Android device. There are advantages and disadvantages to using this approach. For now, we always recommend something like AdBlock Plus or a browser blocking ads. However, we like the idea quite enough.
