Five residents of Humboldt County have died from COVID-19, including three in their 50s and two over 80. Staff at the Department’s Operations Center share their sympathies with family, friends and caregivers of the deceased.
Ten county residents have been newly hospitalized since the last report on Friday. The age groups of people hospitalized are as follows:
- A person in their thirties
- A person in their forties
- Five people in their sixties
- Three people of 70 years old.
One hundred and eighteen new cases of COVID-19 have been treated and confirmed since Friday. About 125 more cases have been reported to the state’s database and are awaiting local review. Cases continue to be reviewed as quickly as possible. Only information on confirmed cases will be added each day to the Humboldt County data dashboard and home page counter. At present, there is no estimated timeframe to resolve recent delays in reporting data.
Free COVID-19 testing is available through OptumServe in the Wharfinger building in Eureka seven days a week and at a different location in the county each day of the week, including Garberville on Tuesday. A drive-through test site is located outside the Jerold Phelps Community Hospital at 733 Cedar Street. To access the site, turn into the hospital aisle just past the entrance to the hospital clinic onto Elm Street. Drive-thru hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is recommended for all sites. For those who test positive for COVID-19, some healthcare providers may offer monoclonal antibody infusion therapy as emergency treatment for people who are symptomless and at high risk. serious complications (cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov /votre-sante/traitements-pour-maladie-grave.html). Performed on an outpatient basis, the infusion of monoclonal antibodies is administered intravenously and lasts about two and a half hours. Local health officials stress that this labor-intensive treatment does not replace vaccination. While monoclonal antibodies are useful for treating someone who is already infected, COVID-19 vaccines train the body to prevent future infections and reduce the severity of emerging infections.

Vaccines are also available at many local pharmacies, and most allow walk-in visits. To check availability of a particular vaccine at local pharmacies, visit vaccines.gov or text zip code to 438829 to find a participating pharmacy nearby.
Pfizer is approved for persons 12 years of age and older, and Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are approved for persons 18 years of age and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Full protection against vaccination is achieved two weeks after receiving the second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after receiving a single dose vaccine.
